You will fight, or you will die.
What secret did the community on the hill conceal that was worth its massacre, and whose gold paid the butchers? A young blacksmith and his girlfriend swear retribution, but first, they must survive.
Compared to most young men of his age, Conall’s life was good. He was apprenticed to his father, the local blacksmith, and his only challenge was fending off the amorous intentions of the fiery redhead, Mórrígan. Then, their families were butchered, and everything changed.
Two men share the blame for the massacre: a mad Irish king and a dissolute Roman, but who provided the gold and gave the orders? Conall and Mórrígan will have their retribution on all responsible or die in the attempt.
Accompanied by his friend and mentor, the veteran warrior Fearghal, Conall’s hunt takes him northward through unfriendly kingdoms and treacherous bogs to the lands of the Ulaid beyond the ancient earthworks of the Black Pig’s Dyke. When Macha, the High Queen of the Ulaid, kidnaps their daughters, a confrontation is inevitable.
Along the way, Conall attracts the attention of the Sídhe, Mongfhionn, a mystical demi-goddess who can make kings of ordinary men. Her power is at Conall’s disposal but comes at a price and with a hidden agenda. Soon, his band of friends swells into an army, and Conall becomes a king.
Mórrígan, bitter over losing her family, seeks to control the darkness growing within her under Mongfhionn’s mentoring, but does the Sídhe precipitate the birth of The Dark Huntress? Perhaps Mórrígan should have died from a bear attack rather than be saved by a strangely dressed foreigner.

“…a non-stop page turner. David Millar weaves a story of legend, real history and unique characters that make it one of the best I’ve read in a while. I can’t wait for the next book.”

“A very well researched novel that brings you back to 415 B.C. in ancient Ireland and follows an orphaned young man on an epic page turning quest for revenge. Just think of an ancient Batman that Batman would run from! The descriptions of armour, weaponry and battle tactics were so thorough that I could almost hear the battle cries, and I loved the bit of folklore blended in. Thanks for the fantastic read.”
